Mandalay hosts trade fair for rural products

A TRADE fair organised by the Department of Trade Promotion and Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Commerce was held at the National Theatre in Mandalay last week to promote small businesses in rural areas.
At the exhibition, cotton products produced in Wantwin Township; handicrafts made of Sakyi rock (alabaster) from Nahtogyi Township; coffee from Pyin Oo Lwin and Ywangan townships; tea from Namhsan in Shan State; traditional snacks from Mandalay Region; and earthenware, cosmetics, wooden handicrafts, traditional medicines, bamboo products and mats from Sagaing Region were displayed in 80 booths.
The fair was held from 25 to 27 February.
The event included a workshop on consumer protection, which began with an opening speech by Mandalay Region Chief Minister U Ye Myint.
The director general of the Department of Trade Promotion and Consumer Affairs gave a talk on consumer protection and cooperation with international organisations. The Association of Consumers suggested solutions to problems raised by consumers of Myanmar edible oil. The Edible Oil Entrepreneurs Association and the Edible Oil Mill Entrepreneurs Association gave talks on the development of import and distribution systems for edible oil. Attendees took turns commenting on how to ensure the quality and safety of edible oil.—Thiha Ko Ko



Hailing the Union Peace Conference in Taungoo

THE Hailing Ceremony of the Union Peace Conference was held at the Sport Ground of Taungoo District on Friday.
Peace supporters marched to the sport ground in three columns holding placards which read “For Building Durable (Sustainable) Peace”, “Peace and Democracy” and “To end conflicts at long-last”.
 U San Hla, who presided the hailing ceremony over the Union Peace Conference, gave an opening speech, and Dr. Daw Mar Mar Wai, a retired Professor of the Myanmar Department of Taungoo University, proposed his support of matters related to the Peace Conference. Author U Pwint Thu Aung seconded the proposals made by Dr. Mar Mar Wai.
 Present at the ceremony were Departmental officials, members of the Maternal and Child Warfare Association, members of the Myanmar Women’s Affairs Association, National Races, teachers and students, trainees of the University of Nursing and local people.—Shwe Win (Pyay)

International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS)  to be held in Singapore

THE International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS) will take place at the Singapore EXPO Convention and Exhibition Centre in Singapore from 10 to 13 March.

The Myanmar Rattan and Bamboo Entrepreneurs Association and the Wood Based Furniture Association will exhibit Myanmar furniture products at the event with the aim of having a chance to study how to create the furniture products and their designs, how to display their products in the booths from various countries and achieving international recognition for Myanmar furniture products and handicrafts via the event, said U Nyan Win, the chairnan of the Wood Based Furniture Association.

The Singapore Furniture Industry Council has provided 100 square metres for Myanmar exhibitors.

Six Myanmar Companies—two companies from the Wood Based Furniture Association and four The Myanmar Rattan and Bamboo Entrepreneurs Association—will showcase their furniture products through 10 booths.—Soe Win (MLA)
