Terminology Mix Up : Carlsberg To Stop Using “TOO POH” In Local Brew

Myanmar Carlsberg will stop using the Myanmar word “Too Poh” on the beer bottles of brand Tuborg, responding to allegations the name was being used to capitalize on the popularity of a classic Myanmar Thingyan song, Too Poh. In a press release on Tuesday, Carlsberg explains Tuborg is a Danish beer that has been brewed since 1875 and music and fun is the DNA of it. The brand just aims to portray music and fun like in other countries, the statement added. The brewery pledged to make some changes but requested for “understanding” while the process is ongoing.

Last week, Zaw Myo Oo, the grandson of “Too Poh” composer Saya Myo Ma Nyein, held a press conference to explain about the misuse of "Too Poh", the word from the song representing Myanmar's Traditional Thingyan festival. He said that the Carlsberg Company has made negotiations with his family four times for the use of the word "Too Poh" but his family never agreed with it. He said the brand used the word “Too Poh” anyway despite their disapproval. He threatened to sue the company if changes wouldn’t be made.

World Class : Myanmar Journalist Awarded For Outstanding Reporting

A Myanmar Journalist, Htet Khung Linn, was awarded with EU’s Lorenzo Natali Media Prize for his outstanding reporting on child prostitution in Myanmar. Out of more than 1,400 registered participants across the world, the European Commission selected nine journalists for the quality of their journalistic work. Their journalistic reports covered topics ranging from the e-waste economy in Ghana, to innovative farming methods in slums in Kenya, drug crime in Mexico, and child prostitution in Myanmar. The 2015 edition of the award was organized in the context of the European Year for Development, and for the first time, the competition was open to both professional and amateur journalists, as well as bloggers. Established in 1992 by the European Commission, the Lorenzo Natali Media Prize is awarded in memory of Lorenzo Natali, former Commissioner for Development and a staunch defender of freedom of expression, democracy, human rights and development.--MITV
