Experts seek inclusion of Kyaukse Elephant Dance Festival on World Heritage List

Thadingyut Kyaukse Elephant Dance Festival with elephant toy donation event was celebrated in full swing this year in Kyaukse, Mandalay Region.

The Thadingyut Kyaukse Elephant Dance Festival was held on 28 October and the elephant toy donation event was conducted on 29 October.

This year, more than 100 elephants participated in the Kyaukse Elephant Dance Festival, and there were a total of 19 elephants, including two traditional elephants.

Kyaukse Eelphant Dance Festival and elephant toy donation tradition event is the only one in the world, so we want to submit it to the world heritage list, said U Zaw Gyi, the referee of Kyaukse Eelphant Dance Festival, who is also an expert on the elephant dance.

Compared to last year, the number of elephants participating in this year's Kyaukse Elephant Dance Festival has increased, so the new generation of elephant dance winners has increased.

Myin Sai Zarni Elephant Dance Team who won the competition threw the entire elephant statue down Shwethalyaung Mountain in Kyaukse and donated the elephant statue, while the rest of the team members also donated small elephant statues.

The Kyaukse elephant dance festival began during the reign of King Anawrahta when the Buddha's tusk was sent on a white elephant to erect a pagoda.

King Anawrahta's dedication to the white elephant (Sinma Yintha) which carried the tusks of the Buddha, has become a ritual of donating 10 female elephant toys along with the donation of food and the emerald bow and lamp-lighting ceremony.

This tradition was held every year in Kyaukse, and later, in addition to donating elephant toys, elephant dance competitions were also held. — Ko Ko/KZL

မန္တလေးတိုင်း‌ဒေသကြီး၊ ကျောက်ဆည်မြို့တွင် သီတင်းကျွတ်ကျောက်ဆည်ဆင်ပွဲတော်နှင့် ဆင်ရုပ် လှူဒါန်းသည့်ဓလေ့ကိုယခုနှစ်တွင်စည်ကားသိုက်မြိုက်စွာကျင်းပနိုင်ခဲ့ကြောင်းသိရသည်။

သီတင်းကျွတ်လဆန်း(၁၄)ရက်(အောက်တိုဘာလ (၂၈)ရက်တွင် ကျောက်ဆည် ဆင်ပွဲတော်နှင့် ဆင်အကပြိုင်ပွဲပြုလုပ်ခဲ့ပြီး သီတင်းကျွတ်လဆန်း၁၅ ရက်သီတင်းကျွတ် လပြည့်နေ့ (အောက်တိုဘာလ(၂၉)ရက်)၌ဆင်အရုပ်လှူဒါန်းလှူခဲ့သည်ဟုဆိုသည်။

ယခုနှစ်တွင် ကျောက်ဆည်ဆင်ပွဲတော်ကိုတက်ရောက်ပါဝင်ခဲ့သည့် ဆင်ကောင်ရေ(၁၀၀)ကျော်ရှိပြီး ရိုးရာသဘာဝဆင်နှစ်ကောင်အပါအဝင်ပြိုင်ပွဲဝင်ဆင်ကောင်ရေစုစုပေါင်း(၁၉)စီးရှိခဲ့သည်။

ကျောက်ဆည်ဆင်ပွဲ‌တော်နှင့် ဆင်လှူဒါန်းသည့်ဓလေ့သည် ကမ္ဘာတွင်တစ်ခုတည်းသာရှိသည့်အတွက် ကမ္ဘာ့အမွေအနှစ်စာရင်းကိုလည်း တင်သွင်းလိုသည်ဟု ကျောက်ဆည်ဆင်ပွဲတော်ဒိုင်၊ဆင်အကပညာရှင် ဦးဇော်ကြီးကအခုလိုပြောပြထားသည်။

“ကျောက်ဆည်ဆင်ပွဲ‌တော်နဲ့ ဆင်လှူဒါန်းတဲ့ဓလေ့ဟာ  ကျွန်‌တော်တို့ ကျောက်ဆည်မြို့ တစ်မြို့ထဲမှာပဲ ရှိတာ။ ကမ္ဘာ‌ပေါ်မှာ တစ်ခုတည်းသာရှိအတွက် ကမ္ဘာ့အမွေအနှစ်စာရင်းကိုလည်း ကျွန်တော်တို့ တင်သွင်း ချင်ပါတယ်။အရင်တုန်းကတော့ကျောက်ဆည်ဆင်ပွဲတော်ကိုဒေသအဆင့်၊နိုင်ငံအဆင့်ဒြပ်မဲ့ ယဥ်‌ကျေးမှု အမွေအနှစ်စာရင်းတင်သွင်းနိုင်ဖို့  ပညာရှင်တွေက ကြိုးပမ်းခဲ့ဖူးပါတယ်။ ကျောက်ဆည်ဆင် အက ကမ္ဘာ့အမွေအနှစ်စာရင်းဝင်ဖို့ဆိုရင်ဆင်အကပညာရှင်တွေအနေနဲ့ ပူးပေါင်းပါဝင်ချင်ပြီး ကမ္ဘာ့အမွေအနှစ် စာရင်းဝင်ဖို့အထိ ပါဝင်ဆောင်ရွက်ချင်ပါတယ်"ဟု ‌ကျောက်ဆည်ဆင်ပွဲတော်ဒိုင်၊ဆင်အကပညာရှင် ဦးဇော်ကြီးကပြောသည်။

ယခုနှစ် ကျောက်ဆည်ဆင်ပွဲတော်တွင်  ယခင်နှစ်ကထက် ပြိုင်ပွဲဝင်ဆင်ကောင်ရေများပြီး မျိုးဆက်သစ် ဆင်အကကနိုင်သူများတိုးခဲ့ကာ ပထမဆုရ သည့်မြင်စိုင်းဇာနည်ဆင်အကအဖွဲ့မှ ရိုးရာဓလေ့ထုံးတမ်း အစဉ်အလာအရ ပြိုင်ပွဲဝင်ဆင်ရုပ်ကြီးတစ်ခုလုံးကို‌ ရွှေသာလျောင်းတောင်အောက်ကိုပစ်ချပြီး ဆင်ရုပ် လှူဒါန်းခဲ့သလို ကျန်အသင်းဝင်များကလည်းဆင်ရုပ်အ‌သေးများကိုလှူဒါန်းခဲ့သည်ဟုဆိုသည်။
ကျောက်ဆည်ဆင်ပွဲတော်သည်အနော်ရထာမင်းလက်ထက်တော်တွင်စတင်ခဲ့ခြင်းဖြစ်ပြီး  မြတ်စွာဘုရား၏စွယ်တော်ပွားကိုစေတီဝောာ်တည်ရန် ဆင်ဖြူတော်ပေါ်တင်ပြီးစေလွှတ်ခဲ့ပြီး အနော်ရထာမင်းကြီး၏ မြတ်စွာဘုရား၏စွယ်တော်တင်သည့်ဆင်ဖြူတော် (ဆင်မယဉ်သာ) အတွက် သတိတရ ရည်စူးပြီး လှူဒါန်းအမျှပေးဝေရန် အဓိဋ္ဌာန်ထားခဲ့သည့်အတိုင်း ဆွမ်းတော်ကြီးကပ်ပွဲ၊ မြသပိတ်တော်၊ မီးထွန်းပွဲနှင့်အတူ ဆင်မရုပ်တို့ဖြင့် ဆင်(၁ဝ)မျိုး လှူဒါန်းရသည့် ထုံးတမ်းစဉ်လာဖြစ်လာခဲ့ကြောင်းနှင့် ယင်းထုံးတမ်းအစဉ်အလာကိုကျောက်ဆည်မြို့၌ နှစ်စဉ် ကျင်းပခဲ့ ခြင်းဖြစ်ပြီး နောက်ပိုင်းမှာ ဆင်ရုပ် လှူဒါန်းခြင်းအပြင် ဆင်အကပြိုင်ပွဲ များလည်းထည့်သွင်း ကျင်းပခဲ့ခြင်း ဖြစ်ကြောင်းသိရသည်။TC

The Kyaukse Elephant Dance festival is an impressive show that is steeped in history. King Anawrahta (1015-1078) is one of Myanmar’s most famous rulers and considered the father of the Burmese nation. He is also the founder of Kyaukse.

This year's opening ceremony of the Elephant Donation festival and elephant dummy dancing competition 2016 took place at the elephant competition grounds at the bottom of Shwe Thar Lyaung hill in Kyaukse, Mandalay Region on 15 October.

U Soe Than, the Minister for Agriculture, Livestock Breeding and Irrigation and a member of Mandalay Region Government and Mandalay Region Hluttaw representatives attended the opening ceremonies.

A total of 29 teams -- 17 traditional elephant teams, 6 sequined costume elephant teams and 6 children’s elephant teams- - participated in the event.

The Kyaukse elephant dance festival has been celebrated every year since the 11th Century, the era of Myanmar King Anawrahta.

Legend has it that King Anawrahta obtained several Buddhist relics on a trip to China. Upon his return to Myanmar (Burma), he decided to build a pagoda to house the precious relics. He strapped the relics to the back of his elephant and told the elephant to choose a suitable spot for the new pagoda. The elephant walked straight to the hill east of Kyaukse and knelt.

It was at this spot that the king built Shwe-tha-lyaung Pagoda, which remains there to this day.

In this year's celebration, the competition teams from various wards of Kyaukse, accompanied by drums, oboe, cymbals, brass gongs and bamboo clappers, toured around the Kyaukse Myo Ma bazaar three times. The teams competed in front of a panel of judges in different prize categories — Ks1 million for first prize, Ks8 lakh for second prize and Ks6 lakh for third prize in the traditional elephant dance competition; Ks8 lakh for first prize, KS6 lakh for second prize and Ks4 lakh for third prize in sequined elephant dance competition and Ks6 lakh for first prize, KS4 lakh for second prize and Ks2 lakh for third prize in children’s elephant dance competition. KBZ bank presented the cash prizes to the winners.

The roads and streets during this year's festival were crowded with pilgrims as well as tourists, some of whom travelled great distances in order to observe this unique cultural celebration.
